Similar to the Belgian Single in that it was originally brewed in Trappist Abbeys for consumption by the monks, the Belgian Dubbel was first brewed in 1856. The first modern Dubbel was sold in 1926, and the end of World War II saw its popularity climb around the world. Today, only 11 breweries make authentic Trappist beer, including the Dubbel, to such exacting standards that no other manufacturers are allowed to display the Authentic Trappist Logo on their products and use the name for their beers.
The Gladstone 2nd Birthday Belgian Dubbel is a transparent dark copper color with medium high carbonation. A refreshing aroma of sharp spice is underpinned by mild caramel and toffee undertones which carry through in the first sip, accompanied by nutty malt flavour and underlying floral and spicy hop character. Pleasant bitterness and warming effects compliment the mouth filling body.
